For a Java Web Start
application, you can start with self signing and then upgrade to some other
source when you are done and want to get rid of the warning message. Remember
certificates are date based and you don’t want to have to start expiring until
you are ready for production.
If your target device
is a cell phone, don’t go out and spend the money yet at Verisign or other
place. Motorola for example signs there own jars and has a very very long
approval process.

[cinjug-users] JAR signing
If your target is PC web, then Entrust will
be good enough for
better price , but if your target is wireless web or cell
phone web,
then you'd better use Verisign even though SSL certificate is
necessary evil.
