getRemoteUser( ) and Basic authentication

Does anyone know of a vendor neutral method call etc. that you can use to 
invalidate a user's session such that getRemoteUser( ) returns null.  Further 
accesses cause the login page to come up without using a filter or any 
programming logic and without closing the browser.
