Remco,

If you want to do a bit more than the standard book examples, you can try some of the practice problems at TopCoder http://www.topcoder.com/tc

I stumbled onto this about three years ago when I was learning Java.  There are "practice rooms" which have problem statements from past competitions so you can really get some of the basics of the language.  Most of these problems are algorithmic so you won't learn files or UI's here, but since the competitions only last 90 minutes, they're about the right size to learn on.

Of course, then you can try a live competition and see how good you really are (or find out how humble you should be).

Tequila is, of course, optional.

Remco,
I suggest two books:  O'Reily's "Learning Java" and Murach's "Java Servlets and JSP.  The 1st is a great into to the Java language.  The 2nd provides more info on developing J2EE applications, but maybe more importantly for a Java beginner, it provides a lot of help on how to configure and use the open source technologies you can use to create a development environment, such as Tomcat, MySql, etc.  These two books will take you a long way.

Hello Cinjug,

I was once a programmer in VB6 and now would like to try Java.  After
some starts and fits I'd like for someone to show me the way, to start
me on the path towards Java.  Is there someone out there that would
tutor me Java?  I don't expect it to be free and would negotiate a
reasonable pay rate...

The computer allows you to make mistakes faster than any other
invention, with the possible exception of handguns and tequila.
