Remco, If you want to do a bit more than the standard book examples, you can try some of the practice problems at TopCoder http://www.topcoder.com/tc I stumbled onto this about three years ago when I was learning Java. There are "practice rooms" which have problem statements from past competitions so you can really get some of the basics of the language. Most of these problems are algorithmic so you won't learn files or UI's here, but since the competitions only last 90 minutes, they're about the right size to learn on. Of course, then you can try a live competition and see how good you really are (or find out how humble you should be).
