I've been very pleased with eclipse on my Macs. Granted I use eclipse mostly for perl development (EPIC plugin), but everything about it is fast. Much faster on my dual G5 than the PCs I've used.

And you can't beat running native un*x tools directly on your development machine...

I would at least consider a Macintosh - Powerbook/iBook.
Mac OS X is an excellent platform for Java development (and development in general).


The G4 processor is very energy efficient and you will find that you can get 5+ hours of battery life on new Apple laptops.
