I hate to be the Mac pusher....(well, no I don't)

      I would at least consider a Macintosh - Powerbook/iBook.

Mac OS X is an excellent platform for Java development (and
      development in general).

The G4 processor is very energy efficient and you will find that you
can get 5+ hours of battery life on new Apple laptops.

I plan to get 1 gig or ram but anymore than that gets really
            pricey.

My biggest hang-up on the Centrino is that for the price of a
            1.6 to 2.0 GHz, I could get a standard

HT 3.0 GHz processor for about the same money. But it sounds
            like a Pentium M 1.6 is fairly

comparable in speed to a HT 3.0. Not sure how Intel pulled that
            off.

We're not using Centrino, per se (our policy prohibits wireless
            devices on

the laptops we order), but we're running Pentium M 1.6GHz
            laptops with 2GB

of RAM, and they are comparable in speed and performance to our
            3GHz

minitowers (also 2GB of RAM, SATA disks, etc.). We run a 18,000
            class java

app in WebSphere, ClearCase, Lotus Notes, WSAD, DB2, and
            assorted other

miscellaney without any problem. Probably the worst thing about
            it is that

the disk subsystem is slower than the towers, so startup times
            are longer

for the apps, but once they're running, you're good.

We ordered both towers and laptops for some of our senior guys
            just because

of that concern, and all of them have pretty much abandoned the
            towers due

to the fact that the performance is so similar.

Sorry, I don't have any free gmail accounts to offer :-0

Does anyone know how the Centrino processor based laptops
            perform for

typical java development work? i.e. running and IDE, a DB
            server, ant

(cranking away at unit tests), maybe a couple other apps
            running.

If you have any links that compare non-centrino to centrino
            performance

            that would help too.

            Thanks,

            -Matt
