Matt,

This is a good question, and something that I was quite concerned with prior to receiving the IBM T42 2379DXU that I use today.

I have Centrino 1.7 GHz processor with 1 GB of memory and a 7200 RPM disk and I am very impressed with the speed that it performs tasks.

I feel that it definitely out performs the Intel P4 2.0 GHz I had previously.

I usually am running:
- A DB server (Oracle or Postgres)
- An IDE (Eclipse)
- ITunes
- Textpad
- IM (GAIM)
- Skype (Voice Chat)
- Outlook
- Word or Excel somewhere in the background
- Firefox and IE
- Tomcat

With that configuration I can compile 194 source files in 3 seconds. I can't directly compare that to a P4 2.8 (which is what I heard it would compare to) but I can say that given the benefits (portability good battery life) I would buy the same laptop again (and we did for other developers).

Hope that helps,

Abraham Fathman

Subject: [cinjug-users] Centrino

Sorry, I don’t have any free gmail accounts to offer :-0

Does anyone know how the Centrino processor based laptops perform for typical java development work?  i.e. running and IDE, a DB server, ant (cranking away at unit tests), maybe a couple other apps running.

If you have any links that compare non-centrino to centrino performance that would help too.

Thanks,
-Matt
