I've tried YDL and a couple earlier Mac-specific linux distros. I
didn't see any advantage to using the linux distro, speed doesn't seem
to be affected. It might be because of the efficiencies gained by Mac
OS X using a microkernel architecture, rather than the monolithic
kernel in linux. But either way, you'll have a fast machine that can
compile and run just about anything out there. You could even get
Windows program running on it at the same time if necessary, but I've
never needed to do that myself.
Cheers,
Troy

Yeah, I bet it would run even faster with less memory if you blow away

I would at least consider a Macintosh - Powerbook/iBook.
Mac OS X is an excellent platform for Java development (and
development
in general).
The G4 processor is very energy efficient and you will find that you
can get 5+ hours of battery life on new Apple laptops.
