To Cincinnati Java Users Group members:

I am posting this to the users list rather than to the jobs list because this is
a call for a volunteer, not a job recruitment. There will be no pay.

The local chapter of the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC)
will need a volunteer to serve as their Computer Contact. I will first describe
NAIC then describe the responsibilities of the Computer Contact.

NAIC (the National Association of Investors Corporation), founded in 1951 as the
National Association of Investment Clubs, is a non-profit 501(3)(c) corporation
dedicated to educating individuals how to manage their own investments. The
goals of NAIC are to assist and encourage the formation of investment clubs,
publicize the investment club movement, and to arrange for educational seminars,
study courses, and meetings for the benefit of investment clubs, individual
investors, and the general public. NAIC publishes a monthly magazine called
"Better Investing" and provides various software applications for use by clubs
and individuals in investment management. NAIC has a home page at:
        http://www.better-investing.org/

The NAIC is organized into more than 100 local chapters including the OKI
Tri-State Chapter. Each chapter is staffed by volunteers who create and deliver
various educational programs including an annual Investors Fair, educational
seminars, meetings and model investment clubs. The OKI Tri-State Chapter,
serving the greater Cincinnati, greater Dayton, Northern Kentucky, and
Southeastern Indiana areas, is one of the most active chapters in NAIC, with
over forty volunteers including 18 directors. The home page for the OKI
Tri-State chapter is at:
        http://www.better-investing.org/chapter/okitri

While the duties of the Computer Contact for a chapter are numerous, I have
discovered that they can be fulfilled using about one hour per week. These
duties include:

1. The OKI Tri-State chapter maintains a database of attendees at events. This
database is maintained as a JSP web application using jBoss and a mySQL database
server. As the volunteer, you will have to find a new server for this database
that maintains the necessary level of security for access, then maintain access
rights and the web application itself. I created this web application as a
learning exercise in how to implement web applications, so there are numerous
"errors" made in its implementation. For example, this web application was
created just before Struts became available. Also, I have a prototype page for
the two or three large multievents put on by the chapter. These multievents are
events that consist of several individual events such as a presentation, usually
with several individual events occurring simultaneously. I have been creating
the JSP code for each multievent as it occurs. As a volunteer you may wish to
enhance the database so these multievents are handled automatically.

2. Serve as list administrator for the several e-mail lists maintained by the
OKI Tri-State chapter using the Lyris e-mail server software. This task
involves maintaining the e-mail addresses of the members of each list. Some of
the lists have open membership where new members require moderation for a while,
but most of the lists have closed membership. For example, there is an e-mail
list for the chapter directors, so you will have to keep up with changes to the
directors and their e-mail addresses.

3. The chapter owns several lap top computers and LCD projectors for use in its
events. The computer contact is responsible for knowing which chapter director
has each lap top and projector, ensuring that this computer hardware is in
operating order and that the latest version of any NAIC software is installed on
each lap top computer. The VIP program mentioned below can be used to obtain
the latest versions of each NAIC software application for no charge.

4. Managing the NAIC VIP program. This program is to ensure that volunteers who
are preparing and teaching courses using NAIC software have access to that
computer software. This task involves knowing which volunteers are preparing
and teaching courses using some NAIC software, which already have that software,
and filling out and submitting forms to NAIC national headquarters to obtain
free copies of that software for those volunteers that do not have that
software.

5. Managing software consignments for resale at chapter events. This involves
knowing when an event such as the annual Investors Fair will occur where
attendees will be interested in buying software, estimating how many copies of
each software application may be sold at the event, filling out and submitting
forms to obtain the consignment, and ensuring that the consignment is obtained
and handled properly with the money and any unsold software returned to NAIC
national.

6. Obtaining site licenses so many copies of a software application may be
installed for hands on training events. This task involves knowing when a hands
on training event is scheduled, filling out and submitting the forms for a site
license, and ensuring that the site license approval is available at the event.

7. Ensure that the OKI Computer Users Group continues to function. This task
involves recruiting people to serve as officers for that group and that they are
continuing to hold meetings where the use of computers in investing is
presented. You can serve as an officer yourself and prepare and present at the
meetings yourself, but that entails additional work on your part.

If you reach this point and are still interested, please contact me via e-mail
at
        mailto:JimHurt@xxxxxxxx

In order to volunteer for this position, you will have to be willing to learn about investing, the various NAIC tools for investing, and become a member of NAIC.

Thank you.
