I use Yahoo Groups every day as moderator and user and find them to have a
lot going for them including: archived and searchable messages, group polls,
space for files (and photos), online calendar with auto-reminders, links
area, and a database facility. For all I know there are even better free
services out there.

I realize it's a third party host and it requires list members to have a
Yahoo ID (email still goes where you specify) but these seem like minor
issues considering the benefits of searchable archives and a central area
for files (source code).

Easy to block spammers from the joining the list and the moderating effort
is almost non-existent. Lists can be private and the amount of advertising
through text email is barely noticeable. Even adding large numbers of users
is fairly easy. Is there some major issue I've missed?

Sometimes outsourcing makes a lot of sense. Just a thought.
